Domain Registry of America - "slamming" alert

If you have received a mail in English in the post from DROA inviting you to renew you domain names, this is a trick!. View a sample letter

'slamming' is a term used for a number of illegal activities based on trickery with the aim of obtaining the domain names from their owner which are then used to subscribe to unsolicited services related to its internet presence.

One of the most well-known companies that uses this practice is 'Domain Registry Of America' (DROA) who makes you think from the presentation and tone of their letter that you MUST renew your domain name through them. Of course this is not true and their 'services' are invoiced for a much higher price than those that you would normally have paid via NETIM. An even more serious problem is that by agreeing to pay this service provider, you are transferring the management of your domain name to them and, de facto, leaving NETIM as the registrar (without always being aware of it).

Despite several successful court cases, the best defence against this sort of practice is staying informed. Only NETIM as the domain name registrar is able to perform technical and administrative actions on your domain names. If you receive a reminder from Domain Registry of America, ignore the letter and file it WPB
